About Me.

Carter Medved graduated from Edgemont Junior-Senior High School in June 2025 and is currently a Morehead-Cain Scholar at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. As part of the scholarship, he is completing an international gap-year focused on global sustainability, traveling through Australia, Thailand, Japan, South Africa, and Europe to study environmental systems, community-led solutions, and the future of clean energy.

Passionate about the environment and sustainability after working with his family to reduce their own carbon footprint, Carter created and launched the national, online platform WattSherpa.com, working in collaboration with various industry thought-leaders to disseminate information on consumer environmental behavior. He delivers cutting-edge research and insights into the global issue through interviews, articles, and how-tos.
 
Carter formerly served as a representative on the Westchester Youth Congress, leading the initiative to diminish reliance on high-emission peaker plants in partnership with Sustainable Westchester and GridRewards.

Carter also founded and runs EnviroVols, partnering with environmental groups nationwide to provide a link to environmental volunteer opportunities specifically geared towards families. Carter feels that to shift the paradigm on consumer behavior towards the environment, early education is key. He volunteers his time educating various populations on easy, consumer-friendly ways to reduce their own environmental footprint.

A highlight of Carter’s advocacy work is being named a 2025 winner of the Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes, which honors outstanding young leaders making a positive impact on their communities and the environment.  His environemntal work has also earned him the prestigious Greenlight Award, which involved competing against students from across Westchester County to pitch innovative ideas for addressing climate change, and first place in the "Black Diamond" category of the 2024 Shane McConkey Eco Challenge, a nationwide competition. His exceptional commitment and innovative approach have also earned him a place in the selective Young Innovators Climate & Energy Program, offered in partnership with Invenergy and the Polsky Foundation.

He has applied his environmental knowledge through internships at startups with an environmental focus, namely Tetra and Skillit, where he contributed to sustainable project initiatives and green technology solutions. Additionally, he has extended his expertise to a research coding project for Dr. Winterich at Penn State University, analyzing survey responses about sustainability and refurbished products.

 

When he’s not busy trying to help make the world a more eco-friendly place, Carter can be found curling or reporting about the sport on greatcurling.com, a site he founded, playing his harp, or flipping burgers at The Beach Hut.
